Composition of Liquefied Petroleum Gas

LPG is a mixture of two hydrocarbons namely propane and butane and is classified as Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

LPG has the unique characteristic of being stored in closed containers at a pressure of between 300 and 600 kpa.

This allows the gas to be transported to any location and to be utilized only when needed.

Inside the cylinder LPG is a combination of liquid and gas. When LPG is transported in the pipes of ones home or business LPG is a gas.

The Gas

Is odorless – ethyl mercaptan is added so that one can identify the presence of gas. The gas is heavy, about twice the mass of air and therefore will lie on the ground. For this specific reason safety distances form part of the gas code for installation of appliances and gas cylinders.

SANS 10087-1 LPG is not flammable until it´s concentration in air exceeds 2% and not more that 10%. Therefore LPG is safer compared to many other gases.

Portable

LPG can be transported, stored, and used virtually anywhere where the comfort of modern living is required. LPG does not deteriorate over time like the petrol in one´s lawn mower.
